Ferret Care and Some Things to Consider When Buying a Ferret supplies.

Just as important is to know what items work. I don’t know how much junk I have bought and thrown away until I discovered what worked at what lasted.

This works well for you, we will waste my money, not yours. This is a good place to get your ferret supplies.

Most of the times, maintaining your pet ferret can definitely be costly.

Buying your ferret is simply the first step of it. Buying additional ferret supplies for your pet can create a hole in your pocket especially if you are not wise in your choices.

Today, buying ferret supplies do not limit you in only going to a pet store. In fact, there are already different online pet stores which you can visit to purchase your ferret supplies.

Grooming your ferret is a necessity. Ferrets are fairly low maintenance when it comes to grooming, however certain things must be done on a weekly or monthly basis.

The most important things to remember are clipping nails, brushing fur, cleaning ears, controlling fleas, occasional bathing and occasional tooth brushing. Below, you will find each item of grooming and a detailed description on how to perform each task.

Ferrets need a large cage. It isn’t fair to cage them all the time. But, a multi-layered cage helps add space to their living arrangement while cutting down on the space required for the cage in your home.

There is a huge assortment of cages; from cages that fold up when not in use to corner cages, using those corners that are usually wasted space. Think about the number of ferrets you have or are going to have. If you are anything like me the number increases year by year.

I have a three layered cage which is sufficient since my ferrets are out all day. I currently have three ferrets.

Ferrets can and do get into a great deal of mischief. I let my ferrets have run of our bedroom during the day. I do however; keep them locked up in a multi layered cage at night, and also, when we are not at home. They need a great deal of room.

Ferrets though aren’t like a reptile and don’t need to bask under a light, though, they are cold and hot sensitive, they must stay within a certain temperature range. They can get by with 60F degrees as long as they have good bedding and other bodies in which to curl up together.

They also can die if it is too hot (over 90F degrees). Make sure you have a way to keep them cool or warm if the heater or air conditioner should fail.

The economic benefit of pet Ferret Supplies in the UK is difficult to calculate, but is estimated to be about £1,000 per animal per year, considering the initial cost of the animal and initial related expenses, such as cages, plus annual expenditures on food, toys, bedding and veterinarian costs.

The British currently spend about £26 billion per year on their pets, and though domestic ferrets make up less than 1 p/cent of pets in the UK, total spending on ferret supplies is estimated to be £250 million to as much as £700 million annually nationwide.

Nice Little Business to be in!

Ferret hutches in many designs are available for buying online.

By checking out the designs available you can form an idea of the size of the hutch and how it will fit in the space you have earmarked for it.

Pet shops are another source for quality ferret hutches. Choose a strong and sturdy model, which will last a long time.

After purchasing a ferret and bringing it home the most important thing that you will have to provide it is a dwelling.

There are many ferret hutches for sale but it is important to buy one that will suit the playful nature and climbing habit of the ferret.

Make sure that the hutch you buy has dimensions of two feet by three feet and a height of three feet.

There will be ferret hutches for sale in all sizes but choose one with this basic size in mind.

The hutch should have a tray or litter pan at the bottom of the settee for collecting the faeces and urine. Ferrets are hygienic creatures so this is essential. Make sure the litter tray is covered with a cloth or newspaper and cleaned regularly.

Pet ferrets spend a lot of time in their hutches or cages as they cannot be let loose without some supervision and attention.

As they play around quite wildly when they are let loose, they are usually kept in cages when there is nobody around to keep an eye on them. They do not mind being put in cages; in fact they prefer to sleep in covered locations.

You will find numerous shops and websites that offer ferret hutches. You will have an ample variety of designs, shapes and prices to choose from. To choose a nice abode for your ferret, you need to plan well with patience and make the right choice.

Many online sites and reputed pet stores offering ferret hutches. These hutches come in a wide variety of shapes, designs and prices. If you have the skill and patience you can build a nice dwelling for your loved pet with proper planning.

When buying ferret hutches for sale ensure that the area of the hutch is at least two feet by three feet with a height of three feet.

Ferrets are very clean animals and therefore a litter pan or tray should be placed at the bottom of the couch to collect urine and faeces. Cover the base of the litter tray with old newspapers and clean it at regular intervals.

Ferret food that is high in protein, fat and low in fiber is the best.

You should never feed your ferret any other food then food specifically designed for ferrets as the nutrition will be all wrong.

You also always need to have food for the ferret available at all times.

The ferret food needs to be out 24/7.

Ferrets eat whenever they get hungry, and that is who knows when! So it is best to keep it out all the time.

A bulk of ferret food is essential. They are carnivorous animals, that’s why you need to give them a high-protein diet.

Dry, pelleted ferret food is a good option. Dry foods are especially good in the summer time, or if you live in a generally humid area, because it will not spoil if you leave it out for a few hours. Dry foods are better for your ferret’s teeth because they do not build up and turn into plaque.

Buying a complete ferret food ensures you are giving enough vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy and the dry biscuits help to keep the teeth clean and strong.

Alternatively you can feed fresh meat such as chicks or rabbit. This is a more natural diet and can be a lot cheaper, although any uneaten food must be removed every day to prevent tummy upsets.

Many Complete Ferret Foods are crunchy extruded food with liver & rice and is rich in chicken. It is highly digestible & low in fibre.

With omega 6 & 3s it contains a blend of fats from chicken, soya & linseed to provide energy & a good balance for healthy skin, coat & immune system. Yucca schidigera is also included to help prevent unpleasant odours.

I feed and sell Alpha dry ferret food in 10kg sacks, the last lot was £10 a sack. This last delivery I have had has now gone up £2 to £12 for 10kg it’s not worth stocking anymore so I’ll just be getting it for myself in future.

Canned ferret food can also be purchased, but should only be given to the ferret as a special occasional treat. If you cannot obtain ferret food, and you must order it online, you can feed your ferret kitten food – not cat food – for a short period of time. This should, however, be a temporary solution.

Learn to read the labels on the bags of ferret food in the store. Ingredients are listed in the order of highest percentage of content to least percentage of content. The first item listed should be a meat item — usually poultry, poultry meal or poultry by-products. Fish and fishmeal are acceptable, too, but may give the food a strong fishy smell.

Cat food is often made as a substitute for ferret food this is not recommended however if you have no other choice choose cat food that are high quality.

Ferrets like sweets, bananas and raisins but they’re not good for them and can even cause insulinoma (tumor in the pancreas). Always check the nutritional labels. It is important to feed them high quality ferret food so they can have a longer lifespan.

Ferret Cages: Tips For Buying Ferret Cages

Ferret cages should always be lined with newspaper so that your ferret’s paws are protected from harm.

It will also make it much easier to clean the cage.

The bedding in the cage should be ample as ferrets love to burrow under things.

If you can find a hammock this is the ideal solution but sweatshirts and baby blankets are also well-loved by ferrets.

Ferret cages come in all sizes, just like homes for people.

There are simple single-level cages and there are also elaborate mansions that include balconies and many levels. Multi-level cages really are best for ferrets and they do not cost too much.

Ferret cages are more than just a place for your pet to sleep.

With a little creativity you can transform your Ferret Headquarters’ into a comfy, entertaining home for your pet.

Because ferrets are so intelligent they can easily become bored. Creating a stimulating environment for your pet will make sure he is never frustrated when you aren’t around to watch him.

What size should ferret cages be?

Your cage should be big enough so that your ferret can exercise and play in it. A good size cage is about 18 inches by 30 inches by 36 inches. There can be at least two full levels designed for pairs or a single animal.

Looking for cheap ferret cages makes sense. It’s one of the, if not the most, expensive ferret supplies you’ll need to buy. Don’t forget that it’ll have to last quite a few years though. So cheap is OK as long as it’s still quality.

What about accessories for ferret cages?

Your ferret will need a good litter tray. Corner trays are preferable to square trays.

Ferrets need to have all four feet on the ground when they answer the call of nature and a corner pan is more comfortable to use. Place the litter tray on the bottom level of the cage.

Wood or recycled newspaper pellets or corncob litters are a good choice (never use cedar shavings as these can damage your pet’s respiratory system).

It’s also a lot easier to find cheap ferret cages online than in regular stores. More choice + more competition = lower prices. And don’t forget that plenty of stores offer coupons, discounts and free shipping.

If you’re completely new and looking for ferret cages for sale, you might want to go to a few stores and see what they look like. It’s a good way to a get a feel of the size of the cages. After all, you’ll have to fit in your house.

The most important things to consider when buying ferret cages is the size of the cage, the bedding and litter area and toys. Ferret cages come in many sizes and types.

A roomy metal or hard plastic ferret cage is probably your best bet. PVC coated cages are the easiest to clean. Make sure that the coating used on the wire isn’t toxic to your ferret.

Below is very popular ebook about ferrets that you might enjoy called Pet Ferrets!

Here are five fun ferret facts. Interesting information about having ferrets as pets, including some facts about ferret health.

Only one species of ferret is kept as a pet. It descended from European ancestors, and its scientific name is Mustela furo.

Pet ferrets are available in various coat colours and patterns within the species. The black-footed ferret is a wild cousin of the pet ferret, but the two should not be confused.

Black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) are the only ferret native to North America and have never been domesticated.

In fact, black-footed ferrets are fighting their way back from near extinction.

You have to be especially careful about feeding your ferret. They have unique digestive systems catered to the carnivore.

They can’t really digest fiber and have certain needs of protein, fat, and calcium. If they don’t get the right ratio of these things they tend to keep eating until they get enough of that limiting factor.

Otherwise pet ferrets typically don’t overeat as commonly as other domesticated animals.

Pet ferrets also need regular vaccinations. The most important of these is a series of distemper shots when your ferret is still a baby, also known as a kit.

Distemper is an extremely dangerous virus that claims the ferret’s life in almost 100% of cases if contracted. There are other vaccinations, but nothing else protects from any viruses or diseases with such staggering numbers.

Ferrets suffer from a variety of diseases and tumors such as insulinorma, tumors, heart disease, intestinal conditions, and complications involving the liver and intestines and spleen.

Many pet ferrets are plagued with multiple issues at the same time. Most diseases commonly found in ferrets will need some type of veterinary care which will often include surgery.

Vaccinations should start at 6 weeks of age, similar to those for dogs and cats. They should have an annual veterinary exam. Pet ferrets must be spayed or neutered by about 6 months of age.

Other habit retained from the polecat ancestor is the storage of items in these burrow areas. After a wild polecat makes a kill, if it was larger than what he could eat immediately, he would bring it back to the den area to eat later in several meals.

Females that are raising kits will always bring food back to the den. Some pet ferrets like to carry out this behaviour with not only bits of food, but other “toys” in their environment such as car keys.

If you are missing some small items, you might look in your pet’s “den” or adjacent areas.

The pet trade began promoting the domestic ferret as a household pet in the United States in the 1970s, and pet ferrets gained popularity as progress was made in neutering young ferrets, developing veterinary care, and developing and supplying ferret foods and home accoutrements.

Now that you’re on the right track to naming your ferret, you’ll want to keep your little friend happy and healthy.
